Uspenskin Cathedral has placed in Helsinki. It was built in 1868 and is still a tremendous monument made in Neo-Byzantine style. This wonderful Orthodox Church is set upon a hillside on the Katajanokka Peninsula overlooking the city. A great number of legends are connected with it. According to unofficial figures, the prototype to Uspenskin Cathedral was a nice church in Kolomenskoye. The main building material was a red brick that was taken from the destroyed Bomarsund fortress.
It is important to say that the cathedral was practically built on unsolicited contributions. Uspenskin Cathedral has a unique design. There you can see several wonder-working icons, one of them is Theotokos of Kozeltshan. Unfortunately, the cathedral has lost some precious items. One of them was an icon of Saint Nicolas, in 2007 it was stolen. Until now it is quite impossible to find it.
Vaulted ceilings of the church are decorated with a wonderful art painting. Another peculiarity of the decoration is the huge chandeliers. On the territory of the cathedral has placed an old chapel. Today it is used for temporary exhibitions and other social-cultural events. The cathedral is situated right in the centre of Helsinki, that’s why every guest of the city can acquaint with it and will never miss.
