Blackrock Castle, Ireland

From series “Ireland's Greatest Castles”
Year: 16 century.

The famous Blackrock Castle is located near Cork city. It was built by order of Queen Elizabeth on the banks of the River Lee in the 16th century. The locals themselves initiated the construction of the fortress. They asked the Queen to build a fortress on the river bank that would protect the city from robbers and pirates. However, Blackrock Castle was used for completely different purposes, even though the request of the citizens was granted.

Blackrock Castle, Ireland Lavish balls and banquets were held in it. The castle resembled in design not a defensive structure at all but a chic Royal palace. Almost all the former luxury of the castle was lost in 1827. It was badly damaged by fire and subsequently reconstructed for more than two years. The next major renovations took place in the castle in the 19th century. Three floors were added to it. The historical building acquired unique features of the neo-Gothic style during this period.

The castle was purchased by the private company Corel Corporation in 2001. Its premises were converted into private residences and offices. A luxury restaurant was also opened in the castle. The Observatory is currently located in a historic building. Absolutely everyone can visit it. Interesting thematic events and excursions are held here every day. This Observatory is distinguished by first-class technical equipment. Special interactive screens are installed in it. They allow making a virtual journey through the universe. Several types of telescopes, including optical ones, are also installed here. It allows searching for new stars and planets. Next - Dunsoghly Castle

Top destination around Blackrock Castle - Cork City

Despite the frequent change of rulers, Cork has retained its Irish roots. The city was an active participant in the independence movement in the past. In 1920, the British killed the Lord Mayor of Cork. His successor was arrested and brought to a prison in London where he died on a hunger strike that lasted two and a half months. In December of the same year, the reinforcements from Great Britain burned down the central part of the city in order to scare the IRA activists. The city remained the epicenter of unrest until summer 1921.

Approximately eight kilometers away from Cork, there is a charming village named Blarney. In 1446, Dermot McCarthy ordered to build a castle in this area. A large dungeon, which is 85 feet tall and 18 feet wide, is the base of the castle. The McCarthy family lived in this castle together with their knights. The castle was also home for numerous vassals. The master’s bedroom was on the ground floor, and the second floor was the location of a grand hall and a security room. The scary “room of murderers” was situated nearby. People in this room watched visitors and could pour boiling water on them and kill them with arrows in case of a need.
