Istanbul Atatürk Airport is the main airport of Istanbul and Turkey, in general. The airport was founded in 1912 and had long served as a military airfield. Atatürk services over 64 million people every year. Atatürk Airport is the second in the number of flights and the fifth in the passenger traffic among European airports. The airport gained its present name in the 90s of the last century. It was named after the founder of the Republic of Turkey and its first President.
At Atatürk Airport, there are three air-strips and two passenger terminals. Passenger terminals are linked with each other but divided functionally: the terminal serving domestic flights and the international terminal. At IST, there is also the terminal of the general aviation and the cargo terminal equipped with hi-tech appliances for various types of cargo, including the radioactive one.
Atatürk Airport is linked with the city center, the European part and the railway station by the capital metro (which you can reach following the pointers in the terminal). The tram station is located near the metro station. To reach other cities and towns, you can take a transfer, a taxi or a bus (Havatas). You can take an express bus TH-1 that goes to the city center.
At the airport, there are the following car rental dealers: Budget, Alamo, Hertz, and Enterprise. Companies’ stands are situated in the passenger terminal. To find service points, you need to go out of the baggage claim area of the international terminal and go to the exit from the building. Near the information tourist stands, there are car rental stations. To find them, go out of the baggage claim area of the domestic terminal. Car rental points are situated in the hall, on the left and on the right, near the exit from the terminal. There is the other car rental company, Green Motion, in the arrival concourse of the domestic terminal.
Companies provide cars in the parking area near the terminal. Dealers offer the unlimited mileage of their vehicles. Cars are provided with a full fuel tank. When you return the car, the fuel tank must be full too. According to the standard agreement, cars are returned to the parking area near the terminal. The rental cost includes the insurance in the event of car theft or a traffic accident.
