An outstanding example of Baroque style is the Ottoman building, which was built in 1607. This building is known as the very first in Germany, built specifically to accommodate a theater. In the 18th century a new theater was built in the city, and the old building was used to store valuable city relics. At the end of the 17th century, the historical building housed an art gallery. During the Second World War, the construction was badly damaged. After the restoration of the building, a very interesting Natural History Museum was opened in it, which still works.
One of the most famous religious sites in Kassel is the Saint Martin’s Church, which was founded in the beginning of the 14th century. For hundreds of years, the church was rebuilt and supplemented with new elements. So now, its appearance is an amazing combination of different architectural styles. The last major reconstruction took place in the 50s of the last century, during which specialists were able to restore many old elements of the church decoration.
If these attractions are not enough, you can visit the Sababurg Castle located in the outskirts of the city. This castle is one of the oldest in the region. The first fortifications in its place were built during the Roman Empire. The first official mention of the castle dates back to the 14th century. At the present time a small hotel is equipped on the territory of the historic building.
