Berlin Tegel Airport bears the name of Otto Lilienthal, the German pioneer of aviation. It is built on the site of the former rocket firing range in the Tegel locality, a section of the borough of Reinickendorf. The airport served as a military airfield of the French Air Force. It began accommodating flights in 1948, but started functioning as a civilian airport only in 1960. It was the only air terminal in the western part of Berlin for a long time. Local cultural institutions usually feature large collections of historical and archaeological artifacts, works of art and national costumes. Unter den Linden Boulevard also deserves your closest attention as many notable architectural sights are located along it.
