The most popular tourist territory called the French Quarter remained untouched by all those nature disasters, a great number of street performers stopped their acts there. In the whole, the process of reconstruction is very slow.
The city was established in 1718, at the foot of France's huge Louisiana territory. It acquired its name after Duc d'Orleans.
Settlers inhabited the territory despite all unfriendly nature phenomena such as hurricanes, mosquitoes, disease and floods. Thus New Orleans started to develop. It was secretly passed to Spain in 1762. In 1800 France received the territory again and later sold it to the USA. Americans were mainly attracted by plantations and rather favorable position near the sea. They started trade from cotton and sugar plantations that very soon made the city the wealthiest one in the country.
