Braunschweig was severely damaged during the Second World War, when was destroyed a significant part of historic buildings and priceless architectural monuments of the city. The restoration of some of the buildings continues even at the present time. As a rule, restoration works take place in the famous Braunschweig Castle and the building of "Old Scales". Several interesting excursion sites can be found in the downtown area, where you can see beautiful cathedral and several old churches - Magnikirche, Egidienkirche, Emmauskirche and Martinikirche. The city’s cathedral is surrounded by the old Burgplatz Square, where visitors will see a statue depicting the main symbol of Braunschweig - a lion.
It should be noted that the statue is a copy of the previously installed monument. The original is considered a valuable museum artifact and is stored in one of the halls of Dankwarderode Castle. In addition to the beautiful church, curious tourists will surely see other interesting buildings on the square - Veltheimsche Haus and Huneborstelsches Haus. They are also of a great interest from an architectural point of view.
