Talking about cultural traditions of Tampere we have to mention the Week of Flowers. This beautiful summer festival over the years has enriched with lots of distinctive features and amazing traditions, and therefore bears no resemblance to similar themed events held in other cities and countries. The festival has been celebrated from 1984; it starts in late July and lasts for nine days. A rave of color, inexpressible solemn atmosphere and a wide range of recreational activities are the main distinguishing features of the festival.
Most of the action takes place on the main square; on the eve of the holiday it is decorated with fabulously beautiful handmade floral arrangements. The carousel for the kids is set on the square; the Frenckellin Viinikylä (wine village) is working for parents, where they can taste the finest wines and enjoy the national food.
Most of the activities that take place in the central square are absolutely free; the most enchanting among them is the samba parade. According to the tradition, each year the festival 's flower lady and a flower mayor are appointed; the title is given for outstanding deeds.
