Europe's third largest city, St Petersburg is 300 years old. With the permission of the President Vladimir Putin, numerous restorations took place in the former capital.
It possible to see the results of this improvement, especially in the streets of the city and in the shopping centers. St. Petersburg was founded by Tsar Peter I of Russia in1703. The Revolution which began in Saint Petersburg, fascist occupation and repressions of Stalin left marks on the capital of the Russian Empire.
Saint Petersburg, located on the Neva River, is a city of outstanding architecture. But all these masterpieces need restoration really badly.
Peasants lived in abject poverty. This gave Tsars an opportunity to live in luxury. Nowadays the situation is the same. Rich people disregard all these street beggars.
Saint Petersburg has a humid continental climate. The winter is cold and in summer the weather gives an opportunity to admire the phenomenon occurring in this city - White Nights.
On 1 May, 1703 Tsar Peter laid down the first brick of the new city, which had to become a strong defense from Swedish army. During the first years of its existence the city grew unexpectedly on the right bank of the Neva.
Peter moved the capital from Moscow to Saint Petersburg in 1712. The population of St. Petersburg changed significantly – almost 40,000 inhabitants. The capital soon started to develop intensively, particularly in ship building. Menshikov Palace, Peter and Paul Cathedral and the Summer Palace became well-known in the city architecture of the early 18th century.
By 1716 the styles of Domenico Trezzini left marks in the impressive Baroque constructions of city architecture, which was designed specially for Peter the Great. Then was Elizabethan Baroque, represented most notably by Bartolomeo Rastrelli.
