It's just impossible to describe Tokyo in a few words. The capital of Japan is enormous and very versatile. From the one hand, this city is full of ancient Japanese traditions, and from the other hand it's a super modern business metropolis. Tokyo grew from a small fishing village, named Edo. About the Old Town nowadays remind the sights of shogun's times. For a long time the shoguns were absolute rulers of Japan. Tokyo is famous all over the world as a paradise for shopaholics. In the metropolis one can buy literally everything: from the latest Japanese technical gadgets to souvenirs and fashionable clothes. Tokyo can boast of its cuisine too: there is hardly any person in the world, who has never heard about sushi or sashimi. But Japanese cuisine is much more diverse in Tokyo is the best place to try it.

The Senso-ji Temple. The Senso-ji Temple was built in 628 AD with the aim of keeping there the golden statue of Bodhisattva Kwannon (the god of benevolence). It is one of the most important Buddhist temples that for centuries attract palmers and tourists from all the corners of the world. The numerous faithful are not even stopped by the fact that the temple, as long as its 5-stored pagoda, is just a concrete copy. They think that the smoke, rising from the huge smoking bowls, installed right in front of the temple, can heal.

The impressive Kaminarimon Gates (the gates of thunder) are famous for their large red chinese lanterns and frightening statues of guardsmen. The way to the temple is full of small shops, which sell traditional sweets and souvenirs. In Edo epoch there took place the city center (Shitamachi) and streets, shops and restaurants, located around the temple have special ancient charm. Every year in Asakusa on the third weekend of May they organize the Sanja Festival. At this time procession they carry along the streets hundreds of mikoshi (the portable Shinto altars) in a noisy solemn.
