Graz is the second largest city in Austria and the capital of the federal state of Styria (Steiermark). The town is situated about 200 km southwest of Vienna or 2.5 hours by train/2 hours by car. The name 'Graz' is derived from the Slavic word Gradec which means 'small castle'.
Graz has a lot to offer. The beautiful landscape, green forests, Mediterranean atmosphere, historic buildings and old Kaffeehaus culture are good reasons to visit this place.
Graz is famous as a student city: there are six universities with over 40.000 students. In 2003, Graz was chosen the Cultural Capital of Europe.
Graz city center – 'the Old Town' – is included in the UNESCO list of World Cultural Heritage Sites. A walk through the Old Town is an excursion to past times. There are over 1000 buildings from different epochs. You can explore this area by foot because the majority of popular attractions are situated within walking distance of Hauptplatz, the main square.
