Nearly every city of Ukraine is interesting and original. Naturally, the majority of places of interest are located in Kiev. The Golden Gate is considered the symbol of the city. Many centuries ago this was the main entrance to Kiev. The gate is decorated with copper and gilding, so the arc looks truly elegant. In the 18th century new buildings were constructed around the gate. The gate lost its original meaning and was, consequently, destroyed. Nowadays the landmark was reconstructed, and the ruins of the original gate can be seen behind the new one.

Kiev Pechersk Lavra is one more irreplaceable symbol of Kiev. This is a large complex of religious buildings, the history of which starts in 1051. This is the year when monks started transforming caves into monasteries and temples. It took as long as nine centuries to turn an empty space on the right bank of the Dnepr River into a beautiful complex of magnificent churches and monasteries. Kiev Pechersk Lavra suffered great damage during the years of World War II, for example, the reconstruction of the Uspensky Cathedral was finished only in 2000. Nowadays, this magnificent complex has not only religious but also great cultural importance as many of its buildings are true architectural landmarks.
