The important historical symbol of the city is the old Gothic church that is usually called by the natives as “Schweriner Schloss”. The first church at its site was built over a thousand years ago. A few years later, it had to be destroyed due to a lack of space on the street. The first temple left nothing except the bell tower. The new church was built completely in 1248. In the second half of the 13th century, a unique relic was moved to the temple. It was a small piece of jasper with a drop of Jesus Christ’s blood. The temple still houses this relic and has been an important pilgrimage place for over 700 years.
Near the temple, you can see another interesting attraction, the old grinding mill. It was built in the 18th century. Today, it still works, so everyone can watch how granite is ground.
In the city surroundings, there is the wonderful zoo located near Ostorfer See Lake. It will certainly impress travelers with children. Over 20 animal species dwell on the territory of the zoo. Many zoo dwellers are very friendly, so the visitors can give them a stroke and feed them.
Another popular tourist attraction is Schweriner Fernsehturm or TV Tower. It was built in the 60s of the 20th century. Today, the tower attracts the guests with the highest observatory in the city. There is also a restaurant in the tower. It is located at a height of 100 m and is perfect not only for tasting culinary delights, but also for admiring the panorama of the city.
