The passenger traffic of the airport amounts to almost 18 million people. It was named in honour of one of the chancellors of Germany. The airport was opened in 1911 and is one of the oldest airfields, which still operate today. The air terminal comprises two passenger terminals, connected by the Airport Plaza and the baggage claim area that extends through the lower levels of all three buildings.
Hamburg Airport is connected to the city of Hamburg by the S-Bahn S1 commuter train line. The suburban railway train station is located in the Airport Plaza. Public buses go not only to nearby areas, but also to neighbouring cities (numbers 606, 292, 274, and 39). Besides, there are official taxi services at the airport.
