One of the main historical symbols of the city is the Basilica of St. Vitus, which is a preserved part of an old Benedictine monastery. The church we see today was built in the 12th century on the site of an earlier one, it took more than a hundred years to build it. Within the walls of the church, there are many amazing religious artifacts: its visitors can see a beautiful antique organ, as well as a gold chest, the secret of which may be uncovered during the excursion. The old church is also characterized by spectacular design: it retains wonderful stained-glass windows, wooden elements, and other old decoration fragments.
The main cultural center is the Museum of Contemporary Art known as Abteiberg. Opened at the beginning of the 20th century, a few rooms were enough to accommodate its modest exposition at that time. A few years ago the museum moved to a beautiful post-modern building. Its visitors will have the opportunity to see exhibitions devoted to various stylistic trends. Constructivism, expressionism, pop art, and modernity - the museum focuses on all these and many other art directions. Having a permanent collection of art exhibits, it often hosts temporary exhibitions.
The city has also preserved the old Rheydt Castle, which looks great thanks to numerous restorations and reconstructions. Until 1917, the castle was privately owned and later passed into the possession of the state. Today, within the walls of the historic building is a museum displaying a collection of various historical artifacts. The castle often hosts various festivals and themed events.
