Sightseeing in Monchengladbach - what to see. Complete travel guide

Mönchengladbach is a beautiful modern city with a population of about 250,000 people situated in the western part of Germany. It miraculously combines contemporary urban features and natural charm. Despite a large number of residents, the city is characterized by a measured, relaxed rhythm of life. Here you can find many picturesque parks, interesting historical sights, and cultural centers. It is also a place where a lot of noisy events and festivals are held.
At the end of the 10th century, Gladbach Abbey, one of the oldest in the country, was located on the territory of the present city. Over time, a small town that was first officially mentioned in 1085 appeared near the city. For several hundred years, the development of the town was based on the monastery economy, and in the 14th century, Mönchengladbach becomes a major trading center.
The city accommodated several large textile factories, craft workshops, and breweries. Numerous wars did not affect the city's active economic growth. Over the course of hundreds of years, the textile industry developed and local plants produced equipment for factories. The city also developed as a cultural center, but during the Second World War, many of its architectural attractions were lost forever. Copyright www.orangesmile.com
One of the main historical symbols of the city is the Basilica of St. Vitus, which is a preserved part of an old Benedictine monastery. The church we see today was built in the 12th century on the site of an earlier one, it took more than a hundred years to build it. Within the walls of the church, there are many amazing religious artifacts: its visitors can see a beautiful antique organ, as well as a gold chest, the secret of which may be uncovered during the excursion. The old church is also characterized by spectacular design: it retains wonderful stained-glass windows, wooden elements, and other old decoration fragments.
The main cultural center is the Museum of Contemporary Art known as Abteiberg. Opened at the beginning of the 20th century, a few rooms were enough to accommodate its modest exposition at that time. A few years ago the museum moved to a beautiful post-modern building. Its visitors will have the opportunity to see exhibitions devoted to various stylistic trends. Constructivism, expressionism, pop art, and modernity - the museum focuses on all these and many other art directions. Having a permanent collection of art exhibits, it often hosts temporary exhibitions.
The city has also preserved the old Rheydt Castle, which looks great thanks to numerous restorations and reconstructions. Until 1917, the castle was privately owned and later passed into the possession of the state. Today, within the walls of the historic building is a museum displaying a collection of various historical artifacts. The castle often hosts various festivals and themed events.
In the vicinity of the city, you can see the historic building of Hohenbusch - a former monastery founded in the 14th century. The monastery remained functioning until 1802, and later local authorities used the building for agricultural purposes. Only one two-story building left over from the large-scale building. Today it is a venue for theater festivals, exhibitions, and concerts. Outdoor enthusiast will definitely appreciate the historical monument, as it is surrounded by wonderful meadows and gardens.
The old Haberger Hof farm, which is also located in the immediate vicinity of Mönchengladbach, is popular among nature lovers and families with children. The farm was founded in the 14th century; its visitors can see a beautiful mansion and stroll through a vast garden surrounding it. During the tour, you can learn more about old-fashioned farming activities as well as see surviving farm buildings and a lot of interesting historical exhibits. The old farm is still privately owned, and summer is the best time to visit it.
