Alte Oper is considered the most important monument of the late 19th century; it has been one of the most important opera halls of the country for more than a hundred years. The Opera house was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War; the outstanding cultural center was restored only in the 70th years of the last century. There is also Frankfurt Opera House in the city, where the most important and large-scale cultural events are held.
In one of the busiest streets of the city the Hauptwache building is situated. The spectacular baroque building was built in 1730 and has long been used as a prison; next to the building there is one of the most beautiful districts of Frankfurt.
It is worth to visit local museums and galleries in Frankfurt. In a beautiful 19th-century building there is the Municipal Museum of Sculpture (Liebieghaus); exhibits represented in its walls are very diverse. One of the most interesting places in the city is the Museum für Angewandte Kunst with a collection of over 30,000 unique items. The museum introduces the culture of European and Asian countries; fine antique furniture, Persian carpets, exquisite tableware and ornaments are among its exhibits. The age of some of them is more than one thousand years.
