The city is considered to be quite calm and safe, but pickpocketing is still common. Vacationers shouldn’t take valuables with them; they are best kept in the hotel safe. In public places belongings should be monitored particularly closely, under no circumstances leave them unattended.
In shopping centers, entertainment venues and major restaurants you can pay with a credit card; almost all cards of international standard are accepted. Cash is needed only to those who hope to attend a small budget cafes, souvenir shops and open markets.
Local people are very sociable and friendly. However, foreign tourists should stay away from some of the topics of communication, which are considered taboo. It is unpermitted to discuss the royal family and to question the importance of certain historical events. Locals don’t like comparisons with the French; it’s not worth to touch the theme of inter-ethnic relations in conversation.
