Overview of festivals and celebrations in Malaysia
Hindus celebrate Thaipusam in the tenth month of the Hindu lunar calendar. Thaipusam is a Hindu festival celebrated mainly by the Tamil community on the full moon in the Tamil month (January and February). The festival commemorates the birthday of Murugan (also Subramanyam), the youngest son of the God Shiva and his wife Parvati, and a mythological event: Parvati gave Murugan (the Tamil God of War) a spear so that he could defeat the evil demon Surupadman. The celebration is accompanied by some strange and violent Tamil rituals.
