In opinion of numerous explorers, the territory of modern Kenya is the place where first humans appeared millions of years ago. Scientists found ancient artifacts, the age of which is more than three million years. First official mentions of the country date back to the 7th – 8th centuries. There were several large port cities near the coast at that time. First European adventurers stepped on the soil of Kenya in 1498. These were the crew of famous Portuguese sailor Vasco da Gama.
Yet at the beginning of the 16th century, Portuguese colonizers conquered many coastal cities. Everything changed in the 17th century when Oman Sultanate defeated the Portuguese. At the beginning of the 19th century, Kenya was famous as a large slave trade center. This period also marks the start of local people’s efforts to become independent. At the end of the 19th century, the United Kingdom and Germany became involved in the conflict because each of them wanted to control the coastal area. The British managed to defeat their competitors, and so they founded first settlements in Kenya in 1890. The change of the ruling country didn’t stop the rebellion movement of local people. Kenya became an independent country only in 1966. Copyright www.orangesmile.com
