Airport location, terminals and transportation
Rafael Hernandez Airport serves as both a civilian and military airport of Puerto Rico. It is named after the outstanding Puerto Rican composer. It is the second largest international airport in Puerto Rico. The airport is located on the west coast of the country. It services more than 500,000 passengers per year. The airport serves as a Coast Guard Air Station. The history of its creation dates back to 1939. Originally, the airport was the United States Air Force Base. Since 1973, it has been operating as a civilian airport. It consists of one runway, a passenger terminal and a cargo terminal. The military zone of the airport is based in its northern part. The southern part is larger in area, but much less developed as a result of political disagreements over the use of the facilities of this part of the airfield. The passenger terminal includes two zones, which are those of domestic and international flights.
The airport is situated five kilometres from the city of Aguadilla. There is no public transport connection with the city. The most convenient way to reach or leave the airport is to take a taxi or to order a transfer. The taxi reservation office of the airport is placed next to the air terminal at the following address: 405 Hangar Rd.
Rental offices, how to find them, where to return car
The number of car rental offices operates in the airport. They are Ace, Europcar, Fox, National, Enterprise, Dollar, Avis, and Alamo. Free shuttles take customers to the rental car collection points of such companies as Ace, Dollar and Fox. Cars of other vehicle rental firms can be received at the parking lot of the airport. The car is returned in accordance with the rental agreement, in the same place where you have received it. Clients pay for services while receiving the car. The cost of additional services may vary. Besides, their availability is not always guaranteed (for example, a baby seat, navigation, and so on).
The companies working at the airport also provide their services through online booking services. The rental cost already includes all the fees such as tax deductions, airport surcharge, etc. Several major car rental companies have their own vehicle rental facilities not far from the airport. These are Enterprise (579 Hangar Rd), Sixt and Hertz (405 Hangar Rd), National (Engineer Orlando Alárcon Ave).
