Airport location, terminals and transportation
Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is located in Maryland. The distance between the centre of Baltimore and the airport amounts to roughly 14 km. It is considered the busiest airport of the state. The airport became operational in 1950 as Friendship International Airport. In 1973, it was renamed Baltimore/Washington International Airport. Later, its name was changed again to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. The airport got its new name after Thurgood Marshall, who was the first African American to serve as a justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. It services about 26 million passengers a year. The airport features the main terminal divided into the following concourses: A, B, C, D and E, which functions as the international one. Three runways operate in the airport.
A light-rail train line with a separate station runs through the main terminal. Free buses depart from the airport to the light railway station. The underground of Washington city (the Greenbelt station) can be reached by bus B 30. Other routes connect Maryland and the airport. Taxi (BWI Taxi Management) and car rental services are provided at the airport. Free shuttles run between the majority of nearby hotels and the main terminal. There is a high-speed tram stop on the lower level of the terminal, next to the international hall. The tram connects the airport with the centre of Baltimore and other districts.
Rental offices, how to find them, where to return car
The desks of the car rental companies are also found on the lower level of the main terminal. The following leading firms provide vehicle rental services at the airport: Avis, Alamo, Budget, Dollar, Hertz, Enterprise, Flight Car, National, Thrifty, and Payless. The car rental facilities are placed next to the lifts on the lower level.
The Car Rental Centre is situated in the BWI Business District in the west of the airport in the Stoney Run District. The offices of such companies as Hertz, Enterprise, and Payless are positioned in the territory of the centre. A rental car return parking lot also lies here.
Long-term and short-term parking, hotels nearby
In BWI, parking is organized in the short-term parking garage (with hourly payment). This parking garage is the closest to the main terminal. A day parking garage (with daily payment system) is located at Terminal Road and Scott Drive. The airport offers express parking services. Free buses pick up passengers at the stops. The most cost-saving option is an indoor long-term parking lot at the Aviation Blvd. The parking lot is served by a shuttle.
A number of hotels of different class and with different levels of service are nestled in the vicinity of the airport. The nearest hotels are the Hampton Inn Baltimore, the La Quinta Inn & Suites, the Aloft, the Hilton Garden Inn, the Microtel Inn Suite by Wyndham, and the Airfield Inn & Suites.
