In April, locals celebrate one of the most anticipated and exciting events, Songkran or Thai New Year. Water is poured on all passers during the festive day; this hilarious tradition symbolizes cleansing before the start of the next year. Those who love flowers would like the festival held in February. The grand Flower Festival is accompanied by an abundance of recreational activities, including exhibitions and solemn processions, exciting competitions, concerts and the traditional beauty contest. In days of the festival, Chiang Rai is immersed in the unique flower atmosphere; streets are decorated with fragrant garlands and flowers can be seen literally everywhere.
