In July and August, Merida hosts another interesting festival dedicated to classical theatrical art. This holiday is one of the largest of its kind in Spain, it starts in early July and continues until the end of the summer. Theater troupes from many countries of the world join the international event. The main goal of the festival is to promote theater among youth. Theatrical figures with a worldwide reputation take part in the festival every year. The main feature of the festival is that a large part of the performances is staged in the ancient amphitheater, which is one of Merida's main historical symbols.
Townspeople are known for a very cheerful and friendly nature. The variety of unique attractions made Merida a popular tourist destination. Citizens are long used to a large number of foreign guests, therefore tourists are treated friendly and can always count on the help. Along with that, some local traditions and habits have remained unchanged for many years. As in many other Spanish cities, there is a tradition of siesta in Merida - a long midday break, which takes at least two hours. At this time, many restaurants, shops, and workplaces close and open only after 5:00 pm. Such an interesting tradition appeared in this region due to the hot climate. It has always been customary to have a rest in the midst of a sultry day here.
