Gimpo International Airport (formerly known as Kimpo or Kimpho) is located 15 km west of the centre of Seoul. The name of the airport originates from the name of the city, in the territory of which it is situated. The facility was being constructed between 1939 and 1942. The airport served as a United States Air Force base during the Korean War. It was the main international airport not only of Seoul, but also of South Korea until 2001.
