However, Lemnos is not only mythologically interesting place. The first people appeared here during the Neolithic. Sintians, Cretans, Minoans, Pelasgians, Persians, Athenians, Spartans, Macedonians, Romans and Turks ruled on the island at different times and somehow left their mark on Lemnos. Be sure to visit the Archaeological Museum of Lemnos. There is a variety of household items, jewellery, weapons and armour of different eras. Despite the fact that a part of the exhibition was carried to Athens, the collection of the museum is rich and you should come here a couple of times to see and study all of the exhibits.
The capital of Lemnos, Myrina, will amaze children with its antiquity. It is hard not to become impressed at seeing a city which has been standing at its place for 2500 years. Moreover, most of the buildings haven't been restored since the 11th century. So, you should definitely take your child to Myrina. Those who are interested in castles, knights, princes, princesses and dragons will be happy to visit the Castle of Myrina(Kastro). It is the largest fortress in the Aegean Sea.
One more place that you should definitely visit is the ruins of Poliochne. It was an ancient settlement. People lived here in the fourth millennium BC. Poliochne is believed to be one of the most ancient towns in Europe. Poliochni was abandoned because of a powerful earthquake 3500 years ago. Inhabitants didn’t try to restore it. Nowadays it is an archaeological complex and the settlement is considered to be the Cultural Park of Europe.
