Berlin Schönefeld Airport is located on the lands of Brandenburg, near the city of Schönefeld, 22 km from the central part of Berlin. The airport began accommodating regular flights in 1946. Later the construction of a civil air terminal started here. It was the major airport of former East Germany (GDR) and East Berlin for a long time. The airport comprises 2 runways and 4 passenger terminals (A, B, C, and D). Terminals A and B are co-located in one building. At present the airport mainly serves low-cost airlines. The annual passenger traffic of the airport makes up roughly 7-8 million people. Its infrastructure is incorporated into new modern Berlin Brandenburg Airport.
The proximity of the SXF to Berlin-Schönefeld Flughafen railway station allows the passengers of the airport to use trains and commuter trains of this station. Regional trains (RE 7, RB 14) connect the airport and Berlin Central Station, Berlin Ostbahnhof railway station and Berlin Friedrichstraße railway station. Scheduled buses run from the airport. Besides, car rental and taxi services are available. The taxi stop is placed next to Terminal A.

Car rental at Berlin Schönefeld Airport guarantees low cost of the services. Besides, you can rent a car from such firms as Buchbinder and Global Rent-a-Car. All the car hire companies are concentrated in the car rental centre in car park P2 (public area), which is situated opposite Terminal A. The agencies are usually open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays. On weekends they start working at 8 a.m.
The information desks of the car rental agencies are found in the pavilion, which is positioned opposite Terminal A. The car collection points are only a few minutes away from the information desks. The leased cars are returned to the parking spaces in parking garage P4. The up-to-date information on the availability of cars is displayed on the TV panels at the desks of agencies in the car rental centre. The agencies offer a wide selection of vehicles from simple economy car models to premium-class cars.
In addition to the standard services, agencies provide additional options such as rental of child restraint devices, navigation devices and so on. What is more, an advanced online car rental reservation can be made.
Long-term and short-term parking, hotels nearby
The territory of the airport has three car parks (P1, P2, and P6) and two multi-level parking garages (P4 and P3). Car park P2 is stationed in front of Terminal A, and car park P1 is behind it. Car park P6 is located closest to Terminal D, and comprises parking spaces for car sharing program members. Multi-level parking garage P4 is based opposite Terminal B. Multi-level parking garage P3 is built in the territory of neighbouring Berlin Brandenburg Airport. The garage is connected to the terminals by a free shuttle service. The parking spaces can be booked in advance through the online service. Several hotels are nestled beside the airport. These are the Holiday Inn, the Ibis Budget Berlin Airport Schoenefeld, the Inter City Hotel, and the Meininger Hotel.
