Besides fruit, Nancy is famous for its fine cheese-making traditions. They use selected cow's milk to prepare world-famous Muenster cheese, as well as delicious Bruer cheese, the world's first cheese launched into space. Cheese is added to various salads and original pastries, the likes of which can't be found in other French cities.
Besides wonderful pastries, Nancy restaurants are famous for their hearty meat dishes, which are prepared mainly from veal and pork. A classic of the regional menu is pork and vegetable stew, and a real historical specialty calf’s head, which is usually cooked on major holidays.
The local cuisine is not deprived of delicious salads made from seasonal vegetables. Dandelion salad that typically goes under the name “Salade de pissenlit” is considered very unusual. The culinary traditions of Switzerland have greatly influenced the formation of local cuisine. At many Nancy restaurants, you can try wonderful fondue prepared from locally produced cheese.
Most cozy restaurants and cafes representing regional cuisine can be found in Nancy's historic district. There are also old bakeries where you can try Quiche Lorraine prepared according to traditional recipes, as well as other versions of french Quiche with herbs and various types of cheese. Be sure to take a stroll through the city markets where they sell fruit jams, the most popular cheeses and meat delicacies. Many large markets have bakeries and pastry shops where visitors can buy not only fresh bread but also interesting sweet pastries.
