Kuala Lumpur is the largest city of Malaysia. The city proper, making up an area of 244 km2 (94 sq mi), has an estimated population of 1.6 million in 2006. Greater Kuala Lumpur, also known as the Klang Valley, is an urban agglomeration of 7.2 million. It is the fastest growing metropolitan region in the country, in terms of population as well as economy. Originally Kuala Lumpur was a mining settlement in the late 1800s due to tin which was discovered there. Some years later tin industry declined but it didn't reflect on the city's general prosperity.
Today in Kuala Lumpur there live more than 1.5 million people in the city itself and surrounding territories. It is considered to be the political and cultural centre of the whole country; it is also in the head of Malaysia's fast development of all the economic, commercial and industrial spheres.
Kuala Lumpur can offer to its visitors quite a lot as to its sights and shopping. One of the places one shouldn't miss is the Petronas Twin Towers which are considered to be one of the world wonders. These towers used to be the highest buildings in the world. At the 41st and 42nd levels the towers are connected by a Skybridge. The towers are open for visitors on Tuesdays to Sundays from 8.30am to 5pm. Right at the towers, there is the beautiful KLCC (Kuala Lumpur City Centre) shopping mall, selling only brand-name goods and several attractions such as the Petrosains Discovery Centre and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. To get to the KLCC is not a problem either by taxi or the Light Rapid Transit train system; it is also possible to get from here to the major city hotels on foot.
