In 1862 the German trader H.J. Eukermann built a store near Suikerbosrand, which is situated in South Africa close to Johannesburg. Several years later there rose a small town around the store. Eukermann named it after his native city in Gemany.
In the end of XIX century Heidelberg became the capital of the South African Republic. It happened during the First War of Independence in Africa.
Heidelberg grew as plain rural town, most of the buildings of the XIX century still stand there.
