One of the main symbols of the city is St. Peter's Cathedral, the construction of which began in 1218 and lasted almost 50 years. Externally, the cathedral looks more like an impregnable medieval castle than a classical church. Over the centuries, it has managed to preserve many religious artifacts, as well as beautiful decorations.
Nearby is another prominent religious landmark - St. Catherine's Church, the construction of which lasted more than 200 years. Today, it is an amazing architectural monument, combining external features of a variety of architectural styles.
An interesting tourist attraction is Museum and Park Kalkriese that is considered to be a single whole with the surrounding park of the same name. This museum is dedicated to a significant historical event - the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, which took place back in 9 CE. Every year the museum holds a historic reconstruction of the battle and hosts various themed events. The basis of the museum's exposition is archaeological finds discovered by researchers on the site of the battle.
