This town was founded in 1496, and its name can be literally translated as "Silver Port". If you make a walk at sunset along the coast, you will understand why this name has been chosen. As the sun goes away over the horizon, the coastal zone seems to be painted in a soft silver color.
The resort attracts mainly fans of beach rest and water sports. Here are created excellent conditions for surfing and snorkeling. Best beaches can be found on the northern coast of the town. Nature is very beautiful here and greenery is very close to the shore. As the town is fairly small, it consists mainly of hotels and shopping malls, so all major attractions are located in close proximity one to each other.
Don’t forget to visit World Ocean Park. Here you will find several large aquariums, each of which is devoted to different members of the ocean. Countless colorful fish, coral and other strange inhabitants of the depths of the sea will leave many impressions. Water Park of Columbus is also popular. Besides exhibition halls you will find an entertainment center for children.
If your aim is to see magnificent architectural buildings, move your feet to the Central Park. St Philip Fort, Puerto Plata Lighthouse and Cathedral of St Philip are located nearby. The top of the Isabel de Torres Mountain is the location of a huge botanical garden, which features plants from different countries. Finally, if you seek entertainments, you will find all you need in Playa Dorada district. All major shopping malls, cinemas, new restaurants and discos, bars and casinos are located there.
