Liverpool city guide: sightseeings and touristic places

Liverpool panorama - popular sightseeings in Liverpool Liverpool is situated in the south-west of England along the Mersey River. It's second largest port of export in Great Britain. The historical part of the city, including the well-known Albert Dock, was put in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 2004. Liverpool borders upon such cities as Huyton and Bootle. On the other bank of the Mersey River take place Wellsy and Birkenhead. All over the world Liverpool is first of all famous for its old football clubs Everton and Liverpool. This city also gave birth to the legendary group 'The Beatles', which started its career in the 60s. In 2008 Liverpool along with Stavanger (Norway) got the status of a cultural capital.

The citizens of Liverpool are officially called 'liverpudlians', but more spread is their other nickname - 'scousers'. They got it because of their love for lobscouse, the soup that was invented by the Norwegians and then became the favorite meal of the poor. In this city people speak special dialect – scouse. Liverpool is known in every corner of the world not only for its legendary river port and 'The Beetles', but also for Grand National Steeplechase. But this city is worth visiting not only because of numerous sights, but also because good shopping, great number of sport competitions and interesting nightlife.

The Albert Dock. The most important sight of Liverpool is surely the Albert Dock, which was opened more than 150 years ago by prince Albert and nowadays is the symbol of the golden age of the city that used to be the port of international importance. Nowadays in the enormous Albert Dock take place various shops, cafes, bars, restaurants and museums, among which there is the Tate Modern Art Gallery and the Merseyside maritime Museum. Not far from the Albert Dock you can see the Head Pier. It is a place for Royal Liver Buildings and the legendary Liver bird (the symbol of Liverpool). There one can have a voyage, so as to enjoy the wonderful view on the city.

The Merseyside Maritime Museum. The Merseyside Maritime Museum tells us about everything that is connected with shipping and port life, it also informs about the history of the largest ports in the world and shows how important they used to be. The port often became the symbol of new life: for one it turned to the best, for other – to the worst. The museum takes place in the Albert Dock. Admission is free.
