Los Angeles city guide: sightseeings and touristic places

Los Angeles panorama - popular sightseeings in Los Angeles Los Angeles is the second largest city in the United States after New York. It is situated on the Pacific coast in the south of state California. Los Angeles is irregularly shaped and covers a total area of 498.3 square miles (1,291 km2), comprising 469.1 square miles (1,214.9 km²) of land and 29.2 square miles (75.7 km²) of water. The city extends for 44 miles (71 km) longitudinally and for 29 miles (47 km) latitudinally. The perimeter of the city is 342 miles (550 km). It is the only major city in the United States bisected by a mountain range.

If you arrive to the city by air you have a chance to observe it to the best as from above all the buildings and the city parts are better seen. Generally, the city is divided into the following areas: Downtown Los Angeles, Northeast - including Highland Park and Eagle Rock areas, the Eastside, South Los Angeles (still often colloquially referred to as South Central by locals), the Harbor Area, Hollywood, Wilshire, the Westside and the San Fernando and Crescenta Valleys.

Officially the city was founded in 1781 by Mexican settlers and it got a name of El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de Los Angeles de Porciuncula (the Town of Our Lady Queen of the Angels of Porciuncula). It it not always named that way as a shorter variant of it is more often used – LA. Actually, Los Angeles is just a part (though the largest one) of 88 cities situated on the territory called LA.

The city changed its status during several decades. First it could be called simply a cow town, later it transformed into a town of gold-seekers and today it is a city exploiting so-called 'liquid gold', that is oil. The city has always attracted viewers and today the situation remained unchanged. The things that mainly attract tourists are: the mild climate, the sea and the almost continuous sunshine (about 292 days a year).
