Settlers inhabited the territory despite all unfriendly nature phenomena such as hurricanes, mosquitoes, disease and floods. Thus New Orleans started to develop. It was secretly passed to Spain in 1762. In 1800 France received the territory again and later sold it to the USA. Americans were mainly attracted by plantations and rather favorable position near the sea. They started trade from cotton and sugar plantations that very soon made the city the wealthiest one in the country.

The economy of the city was based on the work of slaves that introduced changes into its development after the Civil War and a gradual decline of economic development started. Today the basic industries there are petrochemical and aerospace ones. The city is the second largest in the country and certainly attracts tourists as there are things to admire.

Due to geographical situation and historic events the city represents a mixture of French, Spanish, African and American cultures. Having lived together for many centuries they managed to create a unique environment with specific music, cuisine and art.
