Sightseeing in Paramaribo - what to see. Complete travel guide

Paramaribo It’s a lively and noisy city, the capital of Suriname. The culture and traditions of local residents are greatly influenced by Britain, the Netherlands, as well as by settlers from the Creole and Asian countries. It’s really hard to find such a unique combination anywhere else in the world. The old synagogues and mosques are located very close to each other. The local stores sell numerous goods from the Netherlands together with typical Asian souvenirs. It is this combination of cultures that is the main attractive feature of the city.
Start your acquaintance with Paramaribo from the central square, which is called Independence Square. Around the square are located several notable buildings - the Presidential Palace, the Houses of Parliament and several governmental buildings. Ancient fountains built in the 13th century are considered the main symbol of the city. One of them is called Amsterdam, and the second one - Zealand. Even the symbol of the city emphasizes the surprising combination of different cultures.
Several places of interest have remained here from the time of colonization. The Cathedral is one of them. The largest park named Palmentuin starts immediately behind the Presidential Palace. Here you can walk among slim palm trees and enjoy the wonderful singing of tropical birds. Another ancient monument is called fort Zealand. This citadel was built in the 17th century and for a long time political prisoners were kept in it. Copyright www.orangesmile.com
After your acquaintance with the historical heritage of the city, it is time to go to the Vaterkrants Boulevard, which is the location of the largest market and several shopping centers. The construction of new hotels and restaurants never stops in this city, so you can easily find nice places to relax in any part of Paramaribo. New movie theaters, cafes and bars, as well as entertainment centers and playgrounds are always open for visitors.
Paramaribo In the vicinity of the city, there is another ancient stronghold - Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam. Its construction lasted 13 years and was fully completed in 1747. The impregnable fortress was erected to protect the Dutch colonies. The old fortress played an important role during the Second World War - a large artillery point was equipped here by the American army. After the war, huge cannons were preserved in the fortress, which can be seen here today.
One of the most visited cultural facilities in the city is the Surinaams Museum, the extensive collection of which is currently presented in three separate branches. The largest one is located in Fort Zeelandia. It contains valuable historical artifacts dedicated to the country's colonial past. The museum also boasts a rich collection of archaeological and ethnographic exhibits. Several times a month, it hosts thematic events dedicated to national culture.
The Mosque Keizerstraat is one of the most beautiful historical monuments not only in the city but also in the country. The very first mosque on its site was built in the first half of the 20th century. it was quite a modest wooden structure. Later it was decided to rebuild the mosque. Its large-scale reconstruction was completed in 1984. Now the magnificent mosque is famous for its sophisticated exterior and rich interior decoration.
A unique landmark of world significance is the Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Peter and Paul, the height of which reaches 44 meters. The religious monument's main feature is being completely wooden. Since its construction, it is the tallest wooden building in the Western Hemisphere. The beautiful cathedral building was erected in 1885. It is striking in its scale: the cathedral's hall can accommodate up to 900 parishioners.
Not far from the Presidential Palace there is the wonderful Palmentuin Palm Garden, which also has the status of a historic landmark.

This garden was formed by order of the governor in the late 17th century. Royal palm trees were planted and several beautiful monuments were erected here. Now the garden is a well-deserved UNESCO World Heritage Site.
