Divers are certainly recommended to visit Jellyfish Lake located in Palau. Isolated populations of the two species of jellyfish live there. The environment for them is so comfortable that the population has increased to two million individuals. Jellyfish is everywhere in the lake. Creatures live there in large quantities, and, most importantly, they are absolutely safe for people. Over the years of evolution, stinging cells at tentacles of jellyfish were completely lost, so divers can swim there without any fear to be burned.
An amazing lake is located at the eastern part of the island of Eil Malk. Its length is about 460 meters and the width is about 160 meters. As scientists believe, Jellyfish Lake appeared more than 12 000 years ago as a result of movements of the Earth's crust. Depth of the formation is approximately 50 meters. Since its founding, separate life forms were continuously appearing there. The most favorable conditions were for jellyfish.
The absence of natural predators in lakes has allowed populations to increase to incredible proportions. There is no such an example of dense population in the world. It is noteworthy that Eil Malk island has several similar lakes, the main owners of which are jellyfish. The largest among them is Jellyfish Lake, where it’s allowed to swim. The lake is home to only two species of jellyfish, which are Golden, Mastigias papua, and Moonlight, Aurelia aurita. A small population of fish and crustaceans is also found there. It’s recommended to visit Jellyfish Lake in the first half of the day, as its main inhabitants are especially active at night and up to 2pm.
