Stockholm Arlanda Airport is a Swedish international airport located near the town of Märsta. The distance between the airport and Stockholm amounts to 43 km. It is among the three largest Scandinavian airports and is the largest one in Sweden. It started functioning in 1959 as a training airport, and later began handling regular flights, including intercontinental ones. Its name is derived from the historic name of the parish in the territory of which the airport is now situated. The airport routinely operates 3 runways and comprises 4 passenger terminals, which are Terminals 2, 3, 4, and 5. The terminals are linked by walkways and shuttle buses. The annual passenger traffic of the airport makes up 25 million people.
The fastest way to Stockholm from the airport is the Arlanda Express high-speed train service. One of the stations is positioned below the shopping centre, placed between Terminals 4 and 5. Commuter and long-distance trains also pass through the airport. Airport Shuttle is a much more practical alternative to trains and taxis to get to the centre of Stockholm. Moreover, one can request a transfer to Stockholm. Shuttle buses go to the city centre, Stockholm Central Station, railway stations and the other airport of Stockholm. It is remarkable that a helicopter rental service is available at Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
One may rent a car at Stockholm Arlanda Airport. Several vehicle hire firms operate at ARN. They are Sixt car rental, Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Budget, and Thrifty. The offices of the car rental agencies are located at Arlanda's car rental area, except for Sixt car rental. The office of this firm is found in the long-term parking lot (Low-price parking facility Alfa P3). Free transfer buses run to the rental car collection points of these companies all the time. The transfer buses connect not only the car rental offices but also the long-term car parks and the hotels lying in the territory of the airport.
In order to get to Avis, Hertz, Europcar, and Budget from Terminals 5, 4, and 2, you should catch the transfer bus going to long-term parking P2 Beta. So as to reach Sixt car rental from the same terminals, you need to use the transfer bus to long-term parking P3 Alfa. Cars are collected from and returned to the car rental company's office, unless otherwise has been agreed. There is age restriction for drivers. They must be aged between 25 and 69 years.
