Driving Advices for Greece – Traffic Regulations and Road Usage Peculiarities
Previous hints
There are no self-service petrol stations in Crete. Driver simply needs to move to the specified place and inform a petrol station worker about the required type of petrol. It is also worth considering that the majority of gas stations accept payments only in cash. Credit cards will be handy in large cities only.
In case of an accident or a breakdown drivers should not rely on special «SOS» phones, which are located along roads in some countries. It is possible to call for help only by a cell phone: 112 – emergency help, 104 and 154 - travel companies, 100 - police, 174 – 24/7 assistance for foreign drivers.
Car drivers should not forget to treat drivers of mopeds with greater attention. Local moped drivers have one very bad habit - they often overtake other vehicles on the right. Even if there is enough space for overtaking on the left, a moped driver will still do everything possible to overtake a car on the right.

Sightseeing of Rethymno, Greece

Among remarkable sites of the city of Rethymno tourists will discover aged castles, churches and fortresses, museums keeping the greatest collections of artifacts and modern art galleries offering exciting exhibitions of various artworks. The Arkadi Monastery is an excellent example of the Venetian baroque epoch. By its appearance the monastery resembles a majestic palace. Several centuries ago a part of the monastery building was utilized as warehouses and wine cellars. In the 17-18th centuries the church housed a school and was home to copyist monks.

The history of the monastery is rather interesting as a while ago it was a significant cultural establishment, thereafter the monastery played a great role in the War of Greek Independence. The monastery building has been well preserved till present days, today its building is open to public and anyone can walk along its spacious halls and picturesque enclosed courts. The Chrisoskalitissa Monstery which name is interpreted as “golden steps” is located on the top of one of the high rocks.

After a tour tourists have an opportunity to visit one of the observation platforms and enjoy a fantastic vibrant view of the city. The most famous fortifying construction of the city is the Fortezza castle. Built in 1573 the castle has been preserved till nowadays in part only. Its territory hosts an age-old church and several observation platforms.
