Airport location, terminals and transportation
Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport (also known as Winnipeg International Airport) is located in the province of Manitoba, Canada. The airport was built in 1928 and was originally named Stevenson Aerodrome. In 1962, it was renamed Winnipeg International Airport. In 2006, it was renamed again in honour of a businessman and one of the founders of Canadian commercial aviation.
The airport handles around 4.5 million people a year, which makes it the seventh busiest airline hub in Canada. Canadian Forces Base Winnipeg is located at the airport. Winnipeg Airport serves domestic flights, general aviation, and international flights – America, Mexico, the Caribbean, the United Kingdom. The airline hub location makes it the only airport not only for its province but also for neighbouring ones. The airport infrastructure includes two terminals (the main one and the Perimeter Aviation regional airline terminal), a mail processing centre, and two runways.
Two bus routes regularly circulate between YWG and the city. There’s a bus station near the main passenger terminal. Passengers can take a taxi (Exit 3), a limousine, use transfer, or rent a car.
Rental offices, how to find them, where to return car
There are several car rental companies: Avis, Budget car and truck rental, Payless, Hertz, Enterprise, National, Alamo. The companies’ stands are compactly located in the airport terminal, on the first level of a four-storey parkade. To get to the rental centre, leave the baggage reclaim hall and the passenger terminal and go to a garage situated opposite the exit from the main terminal.
The vehicles are received in and returned to the multi-storey parkade. Alamo offers free transfer from the main terminal to the place where cars are taken.
The companies provide the opportunity to book vehicles in advance via their special online services or by filling in the booking form on the airport website. Besides, a car can be ordered by phone – all numbers can be found on the airport website. All the companies don't limit mileage and have a couple of models equipped with navigation systems.
Long-term and short-term parking, hotels nearby
The airport has several long-term (economy) and short-term parking lots. Side parking along the curb is allowed here. The parking lots are within walking distance from the terminal. They are surveilled 24/7. The airport provides valet parking services and has a bicycle parking lot. It's forbidden to park before the terminals.
Three hotels are built at the airport near the main terminal: Four Points by Sheraton, Courtyard by Marriott, The Grand Winnipeg Airport. Other hotels in the vicinity of the airport provide free transfer. You can learn more from the airport information stands.
