Airport location, terminals and transportation
Macdonald-Cartier International Airport is located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The distance between the airport and Ottawa is 10.5 km. The airport was founded on a plateau by the Ottawa Flying Club in the late 1920s. A school of the demolished farming community of Bowesville used to stand on the site of the main passenger terminal. The airport was used as a military air base by the Canadian Air Force for some time. Now the forces of the Royal Canadian Air Force (without a military base status) are placed at the airport to accompany state vehicles. The airport was renamed in honour of John Macdonald and George Cartier, remarkable Canadian politicians and public figures, in 1993.
Macdonald-Cartier International Airport is the sixth busiest airport in the country. It handles about 5 million passengers annually. It has 3 runways, the main passenger terminal, and two general aviation terminals.
The city centre can be reached by express bus route 97 (boarding is done near columns 13-16 on the external roadside). There’s a special transit way for the route. The airport has bus stops (columns 9-10 on the internal roadside) and provides limousine, taxi, charter bus, and car rental services. Passengers are only allowed to board taxis from Level 1 of the arrivals area.
Rental offices, how to find them, where to return car
Several large agencies — Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, National car — provide car rental services at the airport. The offices of the companies are situated on the first level of Parkade P1. The multi-storey car park is located opposite the passenger terminal. The garage can be accessed directly from the terminal through the departure level of the terminal. The offices of all the companies are open from 7 am till 1 am. The vehicles are taken and returned in Parkade P1.
The airport also works with the companies called Routes and Discount Car. Their customer service offices are situated outside the airport at 1749 Bank Street (Discount Car) and 2644 Leitrim road (Routes). Both companies provide free transfer to the place where a car can be rented. Return of the vehicle is done according to the rental agreement.
Long-term and short-term parking, hotels nearby
Near the terminal, there’s a short-term parking garage. Level 3 of P1 and P BIZ have VIP parking spaces with quick access to the departure lounge. There’s a pedestrian passageway between P1 and the terminal on Level 3. The P4 open long-term parking is within walking distance from the terminal building. Free transfer is available from the terminal to parking lots and back (roadside 15-16). It’s forbidden to park a car along the roadside. Only short-term passenger loading/unloading is allowed.
There are three hotels on the territory of the airport: Days Inn Ottawa, Fairfield Inn and Suites, Hilton Garden Inn. The nearby hotels provide free shuttles from and to the terminal. The shuttles are boarded at bus stops near columns 13-15 (internal roadside).
