Trieste is a city and port in northeastern Italy very near to the Slovenian border, to the North, East, and South. Trieste is located at the head of the Gulf of Trieste on the Adriatic Sea. Throughout its history, it has been influenced by its geographic position at the crossroads of Germanic, Latin and Slavic culture. It is famous for its plethora of caves, both in the Italian parts and in the neighboring parts of Slovenia and Croatia. It caused appearance of speleology there in the late 19th century.
