Kuala Lumpur is the largest city of Malaysia. The city proper, making up an area of 244 km2 (94 sq mi), has an estimated population of 1.6 million in 2006. Greater Kuala Lumpur, also known as the Klang Valley, is an urban agglomeration of 7.2 million. It is the fastest growing metropolitan region in the country, in terms of population as well as economy. Originally Kuala Lumpur was a mining settlement in the late 1800s due to tin which was discovered there. Some years later tin industry declined but it didn't reflect on the city's general prosperity.
