During the period of Prohibition the city gained notoriety due to activity of such gangsters like Al Capone.
The City has always been the centre of culture. All through the year it holds festivals, exhibitions, parades, new shows of theatre, dance-clubs, art and all types of music shows. The famous Institute of Art is proud of its enormous collection of French Impressionists. The city is associated with names of such famous people as Ernest Hemingway, Louis Sullivan, Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright who either were born in the place or worked there.
The world's first steel-framed skyscraper, the Reliance Building, was raised in Chicago. Not less famous is its Millennium Park.
The main area of the city is called the Loop (known as the 'El' or 'L'), that is due to the metropolitan railway connecting the centre of the city and its shopping region. People in Chicago speak over 50 languages. There are no other cities in the world diverse in their culture like Chicago which diversity is reflected in a great number of different festivals and ethnic parades.
