Palazzo d'Albios located in the small town of Alghero is notable too. Built in the 16th century, the cathedral is not only impressive in appearance, but also has a unique interior decoration. It should be noted that the old town of Alghero is characterized by an abundance of historical sites. Ancient fortification walls and narrow winding streets with amazing medieval buildings have survived there.
One of the most interesting historical sites is located in Barumini; we are talking about the famous fortress, Nuraghe of Barumini. There are more than 7000 columns of conical shape there; locals used a rather unusual material – basalt – to construct them. Basalt was mined on the slopes of extinct volcanoes. According to scientists, unique buildings have been erected over 2500 years ago. Unusual historical monuments have managed to survive to the present day only in part; the central tower surrounded by the ruins and lower structures is just amazing. Sardegna strikes curious travelers with an abundance of unique historical landmarks.
