Denpasar is a city located in the center of the southern island Bali. This is also its capital starting from 1958. The number of people living here including suburbs reaches 700 thousand. Staring from the time when this place has been ruled by the Denpasar kings, the city carefully keeps its heritage that is represented by numerous ancient houses and architectural buildings, cultural centers – Bali Center of Art and Museum of Bali. These centers have large collections of items connected with the ancient history of the island (pictures, sculptures, masks, daggers), and artifacts created in the 2nd century BC like sarcophagi. Here also work ethnography and anthropology pavilions, where is restored the architecture of the city’s temples and palaces.
Denpasar is a provincial city in which fashionable villas, modern administrative buildings, temples and palaces peacefully combine with rice plantations and large gardens. The central square of the city is named Puputan and from it part main streets of the city that connect Denpasar with neighbor towns. Denpasar is rich in historical monuments, statues and other place of interest. One of the statues is devoted to a god named Brahma. The statue is made of volcanic stone and shows the god with four heads that watch the streets of the city. Pura Jagatnata temple is one of the local sights. Made of corals and surrounded by dragons, it stands on a turtle. The temple is devoted to the Balinese god Sang Hyang Widi. It was built in 1953 and symbolizes the creation of the world.
