The history of the monastery is rather interesting as a while ago it was a significant cultural establishment, thereafter the monastery played a great role in the War of Greek Independence. The monastery building has been well preserved till present days, today its building is open to public and anyone can walk along its spacious halls and picturesque enclosed courts. The Chrisoskalitissa Monstery which name is interpreted as “golden steps” is located on the top of one of the high rocks.
After a tour tourists have an opportunity to visit one of the observation platforms and enjoy a fantastic vibrant view of the city. The most famous fortifying construction of the city is the Fortezza castle. Built in 1573 the castle has been preserved till nowadays in part only. Its territory hosts an age-old church and several observation platforms.
The Archeological museum of Rethymno is one of the most significant cultural sites of the city. It was established in 1991, the museum collection keeps religious attributes, common tools and items, jewelries, being the archeological evidences discovered near Rethymno. The church museum presents an exciting collection of artifacts to public dating back to the 19-20th centuries.
