Numerous religious monuments, which simply strike visitors with their beauty and grace, remain the main sights of Kefalonia. The Monastery of St. Gerasimos remains the permanent symbol of the island. This is the place where the patron of the city lived. The monastery houses a lot of sacred artifacts, and every year pilgrims from all over the world come here to bow to the sacred items. Do not forget to visit St. Andrew Monastery, which has been converted into a church museum. The building of the monastery was constructed in 1587. Once the reconstruction was finished, a rich collection of church utensils and other religious artifacts was brought to the building.
Kipouria Monastery is the place where visitors can not only walk in a historic area and see the building from the inside, but also admire the beautiful panoramic view. The holy place has a very unusual location – right on the top of a high cliff. If you climb here, you will see the whole island under your feet. Another important religious landmark is located in the town of Markopoulo. This is the Virgin Lagouvardos Church. Every year on August 6 a real miracle takes place here.
