As far as the city served as a port that brought it certain prosperity it was subdued to hostile actions of pirates and foreign troops. The city government decided to build long and high walls around the city to protect it at least somehow from all those forays. Some of the sections of the walls remained preserved until today.
Having been a strategically important centre for lots of centuries and during the WWII, Southampton was severely bombed by German troops that made ruins from the greater part of the city. Later the city was reconstructed and the heart of modern Southampton is based around the Civic Centre.
The city is still in the process of change with far-reaching plans concerning building of new shopping and sports centers.
