Southampton was established by the Romans as a seaport approximately 2,000 years ago. The city's development during old times and even today is greatly determined by its strategic maritime importance.
Southampton is mentioned in many historical books as a city that served the starting point for the journeys of two famous ships: the Mayflower in 1620 and Titanic in 1912.

Even today the city is still important as a port with over 240 cruise ship movements a year. It was from Southampton that Cunard's new luxurious liner the Queen Mary II began its sailing in 2004.

It is doubtless that the city is very interesting by its marine history, views and sites but there are also plenty of interesting things on the land.
As far as the city served as a port that brought it certain prosperity it was subdued to hostile actions of pirates and foreign troops. The city government decided to build long and high walls around the city to protect it at least somehow from all those forays. Some of the sections of the walls remained preserved until today.
